Exercise 4: The Rule of Thirds & Principals underpinning Composition
Lecture:
In today's lecture Mr. Vinod deciede to do a revision based on the previous topic as he was quite disappointing with the exercise that we have done in previous week. He emphasized a few principles that we had the most trouble in understanding. He went through each of my course mates photographs including me of course through the projector. I feel so ashamed of mine work.
He said that the difference between repetition and rhythm is rhythm is more towards a dynamic feel whereas repetition leans towards a static feel. Balance in a photograph must be obtained between 2 objects that are being captured. Moreover, an asymmetric photograph has no balance and rhythm in it. It is more or less random and all over the place.
After that, he explained the triangular theory where the said 3 points at each vertex of the imaginary triangle in a picture represents an area where our eyes are most likely to focus in.
He then proceeded to show us a few links to show us sets of photographs that had consistency in them. This was in fact preparation for our final project where we had to decide on a theme and take 5 photographs under the chosen theme. He pressed on the fact that our final project must have variation in each photograph and not be monotonous. He showed us works of different photographers that really impressed me and he expects us to produce such works which are up to par with them. Mr. Vinod then gave a very passionate talk about how our works and productions must create a difference, must be able to provoke change and such. It must have the ability to affect and astound people by how contradictory it is to the norm and how controversial it is. It must be different, it must depict individuality to stand out from the repetitive works of many others and that is how you become well known to the masses.
Reflection:
I admit that I did really badly in the previous exercise and I am
glad that Mr. Vinod asked us to do it again. It was my first time
receiving criticism from so many people and I am quite surprised once
again. It
was quite an embarrassing experience when my blog was fully displayed through the projector. When Mr. Vinod pointed out the mistakes I made which
were also further reinforced by my course mates I now realize that I
still have a lot to learn. I should have researched more about the
principles of design. I would love to produce such works of art
that are different as what Mr. Vinod had talked about.
General reflection:
On the 4a first picture; 1 person, the person is too out of the line. It is will be kind OK if there is no one at the back ground. The second picture of
3 people were mixed in with other objects, like the tree etc. therefore
the point of interest was lost in the picture. The scenery was cropped
very awkwardly, it was too panoramic.
On the 4b. The repetition is fine but was not really accurate, the background is too massy. The isolation is not really clear.
